Housing Options
Finding the Right Place for Your Next Chapter
As life changes, so do your housing needs. At Next Home Hub, we specialize in helping seniors find the perfect living arrangement that fits their lifestyle, preferences, and future plans. Whether you’re looking for more freedom, additional support, or a sense of community, we offer a range of housing options to suit your unique needs.
What Are Your Housing Options?
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to senior living. Each person has their own preferences and requirements, and that’s why we’re here to guide you through the different types of housing options available to seniors. Whether you’re downsizing, seeking assistance, or moving closer to family, we’ll help you find the best solution for your needs.
You will want to give some thought (and talk to your financial advisor) about whether renting or owning makes the most sense for you. We can support you in either situation.
Stay In Your Home
Also known as 'aging in place,' staying in your existing family home while making home modifications such as grab bars or ramps or adding in-home care services and remote monitoring to meet mobility, health, and safety needs is a great option for seniors to remain in familiar surroundings while receiving necessary support services.
Move to a Different House
Sometimes the solution is just to move into a smaller place or a different floorplan. It isn’t uncommon for us to support older adults moving from an acreage to a home in the city, from a 2-storey to a bungalow or into a suite with their kids. There are plenty of options to consider. Click on the link below to explore the current listings in the Edmonton area and simply use the filter feature to choose options that are most important to you.
Condos
A condo is an apartment, bungalow, or three-story unit owned within a communal property. As an owner, you are responsible for your unit's maintenance. Apartments and bungalows are popular options because they offer fewer stairs and typically have smaller yards to maintain as well require less snow removal in the winter.
Retirement Residences
Also known as 'independent living communities,' retirement residences are designed for seniors aged 55+ who are active and capable of living independently but want to downsize and enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle in a community of their peers. You can enjoy amenities, recreational activities, and social events at shared facilities—helping you stay active and engaged.
Home Care
Even if you are currently living independently, in-home health care—either privately paid for or publicly accessed through Alberta Health Services (AHS) with a qualified assessment—is a critical option to consider for proactive seniors requiring long-term care after being diagnosed with degenerative, progressive diseases including dementia or Alzheimer's.
Independent Living
There are no limitations if you choose to live independently. We’ve compiled the most popular and common independent housing choices that are worthwhile considering as we age.
Supportive Living
Also known as 'assisted living,' supportive living communities provide seniors with a blend of independence and support.
This option is ideal for those who need some help with daily tasks but still want to maintain a certain level of independence.
Many retirement residences offer both independent and supportive living options for seniors who need assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or medication management, but don’t require full-time nursing care.
Benefits
Assisted living typically offers the opportunity to live independently in a private apartment, with staff available to support.
Typical Features
Individual apartments, dining services, assistance with daily tasks, social activities, and transportation.
Supportive Living in Alberta
You can access both privately paid and government-funded supportive living options in Alberta after completing a health care assessment. If you elect to access government-subsidized supportive housing options - now known as 'Continuing Care Type B', you need to work with Alberta Health Services.
Long Term Care
Long term care is typically not a choice, so much as a health care need. "Long term care" in Alberta is now known as "Continuing Care Home Type A" and is best suited for people living with complex chronic health problems that require the oversight of a Registered Nurse 24-hours a day.
There are private pay options if you have the financial resources, but there are also some exceptional options within the government funded model. Subsidized suites will require a health assessment and can be accessed through Alberta Health Services. Typically, you would select your top three choices and your AHS Case Worker will attempt to find you a suite at one of those properties.
For private options, you simply need to work with the service provider to ensure they can safely care for you or your loved one. Whether privately funded or subsidized, all residences must conform to minimum care standards regulated by provincial legislation. You may find that some private options exceed the minimum standards required and offer a wider variety of options, but they do come at a cost. Round the clock healthcare is not inexpensive.
Some excellent local options for private long term care are Canterbury Haven and Exquisicare.

“During the coldest week of the winter, I received the long anticipated call from AHS that an assisted living room was available for my elderly mother, who suffers from dementia. As her lone family member, I had to organize too many things without nearly enough help. Cue Michael Draper to the rescue! He arrived full prepared at our first meeting with an extensive array of industry partners who were invaluable in facilitating every phase of this process. It all came together like magic! If I could give him 100 stars, I would. Thank you again, Mike! You saved my sanity.”
