Senior living homes, commonly referred to as ‘retirement residences’ are an excellent choice for older adults who might be seeking a vibrant and carefree lifestyle. The Edmonton region offers a superb collection of retirement residences catering to seniors, serving a wide variety of lifestyles and different levels of care.

Sometimes it can feel truly overwhelming trying to sort out your options. The first thing to understand is that they all offer different levels of care. We are well-experienced with the ability to offer unbiased support as you navigate your housing choices.

Independent Living

Designed for folks who are cognitively and functionally independent, but seeking a maintenance-free, safe, secure neighborhood. Each property offers different services and amenities and additional healthcare options as you age, but typically, you will be renting an apartment within an amenity-rich building. Food and service options vary greatly, so it is worthwhile joining us on one of our signature Lunch and Learns, or Brunch and Learns to explore the options in some of your potential choices.

Supportive Living

Some of the buildings offer healthcare right on site, enabling them to offer supportive living for seniors who might benefit from a little more support with daily living. This can certainly get a little confusing if you are trying to navigate your options. Many of the buildings offer you the option to add-on care services as required and simply pay them privately; or you can hire an outside homecare agency to support you. Unique to Alberta, you can also receive funded homecare, delivered within a retirement residence.

Assisted Living

If your health needs advance from scheduled care to unscheduled care, your healthcare team may make the recommendation that you consider Assisted Living. There are a few service providers that offer this level of care outside of the government-funded model and they are excellent, if you have the resources, with a high staff to resident ratio. They can be costly, however.

Continuing Care Type B

Formerly known as Designated Supportive Living - this is the “government-funded” model of ‘Assisted Living”. Some buildings have a contract with Alberta Health Services to deliver this level of care and the rates are set by AHS.

Memory Care

Secure neighborhoods designed for folks who are living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. There are both private-pay options or government funded options.

Long-term Care

Care levels designed for folks with complex health needs or more advanced stages of dementia. Again, there are some exceptional choices if you have the resources to pay privately, or the government subsidized model, now known as ‘Continuing Care Home Type A’.

*With all of the government-subsidized models, it should be noted that they are often waitlisted and you may not have your first choice. You will need an assessment to access the funding, then you would select your top three properties. From there, your AHS Case Manager will work to support you in getting into one of your preferred properties.

Benefits of Senior Living

A retirement residence can be a great choice when:

  • You are a couple and one member of the couple is starting to lean on the other a little more for support

  • Living at home becomes isolating or too much to manage

  • Your loved one would benefit from help with meals, housekeeping, or medication reminders

  • Safety and security are a growing concern

  • Social connection and daily activity are important for your wellbeing

  • You’re spending increasing time coordinating care or support

Retirement communities offer more than just a place to live - they offer peace of mind, community, and access to care when it’s needed.

When is the Right Time?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Sometimes the signs are subtle - missed appointments, reduced mobility, or signs of loneliness. Other times, a fall or health scare accelerates the decision. The death of a spouse or loss of a driver's license may increase your feelings of loneliness and isolation. You may not be eating well anymore or feeling unsafe in your existing home.

All of these things are a sign that it might be time to consider a lifestyle change. Most people wait too long to make the decision. If you are failing to thrive in your existing situation, let’s connect. We can help you explore your next home options.

How to Choose the Right Retirement Residence

Choosing the right place goes beyond amenities - it’s about culture, care, and community. Start with a short list of must-haves, then explore how each residence stacks up.

Here are some questions to consider:

  • What’s the atmosphere like? Friendly and homey? Professional and quiet?

  • Are meals, housekeeping, and social activities included?

  • Can they personalize their suite?

  • What’s your gut feeling after a tour?

  • Does the residence offer the level of care you or your loved one may need now - or in the future?
